Lake County is truly a water
sports and nature lovers paradise. With 1400 lakes and
350 miles of shoreline, there is something for everyone.
The sprawling Harris Chain of Lakes hosts many major bass
tournaments. In January, the county hosts a nationally
televised professional tournament held by ESPN. The
winning catch wins one angler a check for $100,000!
In addition to the Harris
Chain, the county is covered with dozens of fishable lakes
accessible to the public and thousands of ponds and small private
lakes. Each year, huge bass are taken from these
waters, some in excess of 15 pounds.
Largemouth
bass
regularly grow past the 10 pound mark and speckled perch or
"crappie" as they are called locally, can exceed 3 pounds.
Bluegills and Shellcrackers are also a favorite with anglers who
are looking for a fish dinner as well as great fun without a lot
of challenge.
Cruising the Chain is a popular
pastime with great sightseeing attractions such as the Dead River
and the Dora Canal. Dead River Vic's and Big
John's Restaurants are waterside favorites among the boating crowd.
Established in 1913, the
Mount Dora Yacht Club offers
sailing lessons and sponsors a popular annual regatta at Gilbert
Park on the shores of Lake Dora.
Lake Eustis hosts numerous sailing regattas as well as popular
power boat racing events. For information about the Lake
Eustis Sailing club click

Forth of July festivities
include fireworks over the Lakes. Boaters have a front-row
seat at this popular event. From the center of Lake Eustis
it is possible to view the fireworks of Mount Dora, Tavares,
Eustis, Clermont, Leesburg and Lake Lake, all at the same time!
The Clermont Chain, located in
Southern Lake County, is also
popular with the cruising crowd. The clear waters are
popular with the water and jet skiers. On the Clermont
Chain there is Lake Louisa Park, a 4300 acre state park where you
can find swimming, canoeing, fishing, horse trails, and
picnicking.
The vast Saint Johns River boarders
the county on the East. If you're so inclined, here you can
travel all the way to Jacksonville where the river flows into the
Atlantic Ocean.
If you have a small boat or
just want to fish off the bank, the National Forest Service
maintains a number of docks that are especially popular.
More information about the Ocala National Forest is located in
this website under the
Recreation/National Forest
