Lake County Schools have been
recognized by the Florida Department of Education as a model
district for its Blueprint for Career Preparation plan.
Tech-prep programs begin at the eighth-grade level and allow
students to prepare for either a trade or post-secondary education
by enrolling in a variety of vocational programs while attending
regular classes. Courses are offered in electronics,
computer technology, welding and mechanical trades.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
There are 27 elementary schools
in Lake County covering grades kindergarten though 5th grade.
Three schools, Tavares, Minneola and Clermont, each offers a
standard curriculum with a strong emphasis on reading, writing and
math skills. Subjects include language arts, math, science,
health, music, art, physical education and social studies.
Cypress Ridge is a math,
science and technology magnet school, offering students a core
concentration in these areas. Each classroom has computers
and every grade level receives instruction in life sciences, the
human body, earth, space and the environment. Field trips
are a major component of the program.
MIDDLE SCHOOLS
The eleven middle schools
provide students in grades six through eight instruction in math,
science, reading, language arts, social studies and physical
education. Other elective disciplines are available in art,
music, foreign language and computer training. Students may
participate in intramural athletics.
HIGH SCHOOLS
There are 9 high schools
in the county. Lake County
Schools has adopted the School-To-Work approach to learning where
students are asked to select a cluster of courses by the 10th
grade. Cluster subjects consist of Agriculture & Natural
Sciences, Business & Technology, Culinary Arts, College Prep.
Health, Hospitality, Industrial or Video and the Arts.
Elements of the program include a combination of School-Based
Learning, Work Based-Learning and On-the-Job Instruction, matching
students and employers who act as mentors.
Each high school offers
advanced placement and honors programs. At South Lake High,
students enrolled in the Health Career Academy will receive basic
education in pharmacy, radiology, paramedic training and physical
therapy in conjunction with South Lake Hospital. South Lake
is also one of only 70 schools nationwide to be named a National
Service Learning School.
PRIVATE SCHOOLS
There are over a dozen private
schools serving Lake County, the largest being Montverde Academy,
offering dormitory style housing in a picturesque setting.
There are several Montessori Christian-centered schools throughout
the county, including Montessori N.E.S.T. in Mount Dora. Their

LAKE-SUMTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Founded in 1962, Lake-Sumter
Community College now serves more than 6,000 students annually at
its main campus in Leesburg and its 40-acre Sumter Center in
Sumterville. LSCC offers two-year degree programs for the
Associate in Arts (A.A.) transfer degree, Associate in Science (A.S.)
degree and Certificate programs in such disciplines as Business
Data Processing and Dental Hygiene. Associate in Science
degree programs are offered in over 15 disciplines including
Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Criminal
Justice, Financial Services, Fire Science, Graphic Design and
Nursing.
Lake Sumter Community College
completed their new 60,000 square foot South Campus in 2002, in
partnership with the University of Central Florida. The
partnership with UCF allows students to receive Associate of Arts
Degrees in Elementary Education and R.N. and B.S.N. programs where
credits earned can be transferred to UCF through their "2+2"
program. The south campus also offers A.S. degrees in
Business Administration and Computer Science and plans to offer
Hospitality Management and Sports Training. You can visit

LAKE TECHNICAL CENTER
Lake Technical Center, Eustis,
Florida is a post-secondary technical education facility of the
Lake County School District, providing certificate programs,
part-time short-term classes, online classes, adult general
education, and support services for business and industry.
LTC's mission is to "meet the educational needs of the community
by offering a variety of high quality vocational and technical
training opportunities. The school focuses on turning
today's dreams into tomorrow's successes."
Approximately 4,500 students
are served annually in the wide range of programs. The
Commission of the Council on Occupational Education accredits LTC.
Financial aid is available and most programs are approved for VA.
