Lake County is located in
Central Florida, just 25 miles Northwest of Orlando. Unlike
most of Florida, Lake County is hilly with over 1,400 natural
lakes. Mount Dora is 184' above sea level and is one of the
highest elevations in Florida. The Harris Chain of Lakes is
a chain of large lakes connected by rivers and canals. All
totaled, the Harris Chain covers over 76,000 acres. These
lakes are also connected to the Atlantic Ocean through the
Ocklawaha River which flows into the St. Johns River south of
Jacksonville.
The climate in Lake County is
very different than that found in South Florida or on the coasts. We
have distinct seasons with beautiful foliage color changes
but our winters are mild and of course snow-free! There's
just enough of a nip in the air to remind you that the season is
here.
Lake County still retains its
down-home country atmosphere. The largest city is Leesburg
with 15,409 residents. Eustis comes in a close second with
15,379 residents. Expanding Clermont has seen a 30% growth
rate since 1980. This, however, does not signal a decline in
the quality of life in the town. The South Lake Economic
Development Council is committed to maintaining a relaxed, rural
environment, while promoting economic expansion.
The City of Lady Lake is known
as the home of The Villages. This community of over
50,000 residents is designed exclusively as an active retirement
community. The population of the Villages is expected to
double by 2010.
To the North, Lake County is
bordered by the Ocala National Forest. The forest covers a
total of 383,573 acres of pristine woodlands, ecological sites,
trails and natural springs. The City of Umatilla, with just
over 2000 residents, is the gateway to the National Forest.
The heart of Lake County is the
Golden Triangle Area. The triangle is made up of the cities
of Mount Dora, Tavares and Eustis. Tavares is the county
seat housing the County Court House and Government Centers.
Eustis is a small city that is rich in history. Nestled
along the eastern shore of Lake Eustis, the 7,000 acre lake
provides a picturesque background for this beautiful small town
where friendliness is not a thing of the past.
Mount Dora is the shinning
jewel of the Golden Triangle. Named by Money magazine as one
of three "Best Places to Live" in America, the streets are lined
with giant oaks, giving all who visit here a feeling of being in
19th Century England.
Once known for producing
citrus, Lake County is poised to reap the harvest of wealth
through economic growth and diversity, with an ever-watchful eye
on preserving its most valuable commodity - it's natural resources
and lifestyle.
